The core competitiveness of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone lies in resource complementarity, not tariff incentives

11 July 2025, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, Gan Kim Yong, stated at the Singapore Economic Resilience Taskforce (SERT) that the core competitiveness of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) lies in the complementary ecosystem between Malaysia and Singapore, rather than relying on tariff incentives. His remarks further clarified the strategic positioning of the SEZ, emphasizing the importance of structural collaboration for long-term sustainable development.

Gan noted that the Johor–Singapore SEZ could potentially offer a "new paradigm" for ASEAN economic integration—one that achieves synergy through targeted complementarity rather than homogeneous competition, resulting in a “1+1>2” effect.

In addition, Singapore and Malaysia are in discussions with Indonesia to explore further cooperation, aiming to advance toward a Johor–Singapore–Indonesia economic triangle and strengthen Singapore’s appeal to global enterprises.
