16 July 2025, the first two new-generation two-car trains officially began operations on the Sengkang–Punggol Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, marking a significant milestone in the upgrade of this essential transport network serving Singapore’s northeastern region.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has procured a total of 25 new two-car trains to replace the existing fleet of 25 first-generation single-car trains and 8 older two-car trains. This move aims to accommodate increasing commuter demand in the growing Sengkang and Punggol towns.
Enhanced Passenger Experience and Safety Features
Designed with comfort and safety in mind, the new trains feature reconfigured seating layouts to maximise capacity, improved air-conditioning, energy-efficient LED lighting, and new red warning lights above the train doors — a first for Singapore’s LRT system — that flash when doors are closing to alert passengers.
Additional features include interconnecting gangways for easier evacuation in emergencies and onboard diagnostic screens that allow real-time fault monitoring by maintenance teams, improving operational reliability.
Phased Rollout and Long-Term Planning
The first two trains will undergo trial service on the Punggol East and West Loops over two weekends, before being introduced into regular weekday operations from the end of July.
Manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the third-generation trains offer lower noise levels and are unaffected by road traffic. By 2028, the Sengkang–Punggol LRT system will be fully upgraded to a fleet of 33 two-car trains, including 8 existing second-generation trains — significantly boosting passenger capacity.

Integrated Network Upgrade for the Northeast
The LRT upgrade is part of a broader plan to enhance transport connectivity in Singapore’s northeast. To support the expanded fleet, LTA began expansion works on the Sengkang Depot in 2022, increasing its size from 3.5 hectares to 11.1 hectares to provide additional space for train stabling and maintenance facilities.
SBS Transit, the system operator, reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a safe, reliable, and sustainable commuting experience through continuous hardware upgrades and service improvements for residents in the area.
