Hanfu Dancers Shine at Berlin Carnival: Chinese Youth Build Cross-Cultural Bridges Through Traditional Attire


June 8, 2025 — At the Berlin Cultural Carnival, the Hello China” Hanfu parade team, led by Chinese youth, captivated audiences with a striking display featuring a 14-meter golden dragon and classical-inspired court ladies. Their elegant costumes and carefully crafted props helped them stand out among 68 groups, earning the Best Props and Costumes Award.” Organized by the Berlin Chenyin Hanfu Society, the performance drew inspiration from classical Chinese art such as Nymph of the Luo River and Court Parade of Taoist Deities, with over 30 handmade props developed during seven months of preparation.

 

The team showcased cross-cultural collaboration, featuring members from various countriesincluding international friends joining lion dancespersisting through four hours of interactive performance in 40°C heat. Founded in 2018 by Chinese students, the Hanfu Society has grown into a 400-member intercultural community. Through events like Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations recreating Tang Dynasty murals and Spring Festival activities incorporating Hakka folk traditions, the group has made Hanfu a vibrant link between Chinese and German cultures. Audience curiosity about patterns and traditional etiquette has inspired creative outreach, introducing Chinese aesthetics in an engaging and accessible manner.

 

Although core members have established careers locally, their passion for cultural exchange continues to attract growing German participation. This carnival award not only acknowledges Eastern aesthetics on a global stage, but also highlights the dedication of young Chinese individuals in fostering mutual understanding through cultural expression.
