Ming Dynasty Gold Treasures Shine in Gotha: China-Germany Cultural Exchange Celebrates 50 Years of China-EU Relations

June 21, 2025 - The special exhibition "Gold Treasures of the Ming Dynasty" opened magnificently at the Ducal Museum of Gotha, Germany, featuring 79 exquisite pieces (sets) from the collection of Xi’an Qujiang Art Museum. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations and the 1250th founding anniversary of Gotha, showcasing the historical, technical, and ornamental brilliance of high-level Ming goldwork and building a dazzling platform for East-West artistic dialogue.

The Friedenstein Foundation Gotha and the Ducal Museum, adhering to the principle of “mutual learning among civilizations,” have positioned this exhibition as a key practice in cross-cultural exchange. Thuringia’s Minister President Voigt expressed hopes that the exhibition would deepen the friendly state-province relationship and economic cooperation with Shaanxi. Zeng Fanhua, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Germany, emphasized that the event serves not only as a bridge for Sino-German cultural exchange but also as a bond for people-to-people connections, additionally inviting Germans to experience Chinese culture firsthand under the visa-waiver policy. Curator Lin Shaoping introduced a “two-way reciprocity” concept, announcing that Gotha’s treasures will be exhibited in Xi’an next year, opening a new chapter in bilateral cultural dialogue.

As a major cultural milestone since Shaanxi and Thuringia established their friendship in 1997, the exhibition highlights both the excellence of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and the profound humanistic spirit enriching China-EU relations. It stands as a testimony to Sino-German collaboration across culture and economy.
