Aerospace

Globally, the industry was negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with many suppliers facing closure due to reduced aircraft production rates by original equipment manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus. However, the aerospace industry anticipates a gradual improvement in aircraft demand and increase in passenger volume as borders reopen. This will have a positive spillover effect on the industry's manufacturing and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) segments. According to Roland Berger, travel demand is expected to recover by 2024, thanks largely to global vaccination programs, the use of travel credentials, relaxation of domestic restrictions, and the opening of borders.

The industry remains a strategic growth area for Malaysia, with a vibrant mix of foreign and local industry players. There are approximately 230 companies involved in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), aerospace manufacturing, education and training, system integration, and engineering and design activities.

Local companies that have become part of the global supply chain include UMW Aerospace, SME Aerospace, CTRM Aero Composite Asia AeroTechnic, and Airod, among others. Malaysia also has numerous supporting companies, such as IAC Manufacturing, Asahi Malaysia Airlines, Micron Concept Aviation Structures, and Morisi Integrated Power.

Malaysia remains committed to becoming a preferred global aerospace outsourcing hub.

Human Capital Development

To support a skilled workforce to meet aerospace demands, local training institutions have initiated several aerospace-related training activities. These include the Advanced Composites Training Centre (ACTC) at Universiti Kuala Lumpur-Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology, the Malaysian Aviation Training Academy, the Advanced Aerospace Technology Centre, and Aero Precision Resources, among others.

Over 30 universities in Malaysia offer aerospace-related courses, including Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, International Islamic University Malaysia, Tun Hussein Onn University of Malaysia, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

In addition to human capital development efforts, Malaysia provides comprehensive infrastructure for the industry. Currently, Malaysia has several aerospace parks, including Subang Aerotech Park, Kuala Lumpur Aerotech Park, UMW High Value Manufacturing Park, Senai Airport Aerotech Park, Nusajaya Tech Park, and Kulim Hi-Tech Park, which offer ready-built facilities or plots for development of specific project types.
